How to Compare Website Quotes for a UK Small Business

Two website quotes can describe very different jobs. Use this practical comparison to understand scope, ownership, ongoing costs and what happens after launch.

Start with the same brief

A lower quote is only better value if it covers the work you actually need. Before comparing totals, give each designer the same brief: who the website is for, which services it must explain, and what a successful visitor should do. Include the number of pages, content responsibilities and any booking, payment or customer account requirements.

For example, a five-page brochure website with an enquiry form is different from a five-page site with a booking system that takes deposits and sends reminders. Count the workflows as well as the pages. Ask each supplier to identify assumptions and exclusions in writing so you can compare the same outcome.

Turn every quote into a scope checklist

Copy the following headings into a spreadsheet and ask each supplier to fill any gaps. A missing item is a question to resolve, rather than proof that the supplier is unsuitable. Some businesses already have good photography and copy; others need those created as part of the project.

  • Pages and templates: which URLs and page types are included?
  • Content: who writes, checks and uploads text and images?
  • Functionality: which forms, integrations and payment journeys will be tested?
  • SEO foundations: are titles, descriptions, redirects and a sitemap included?
  • Delivery: how many review rounds are included, and what triggers an extra charge?
  • Handover: who owns the domain, website files, accounts and content?

Compare the cost of running the site

Ask for a first-year cost and a separate ongoing annual cost. Hosting, domain renewal, paid software, maintenance and support can be billed separately. Check whether quoted figures include VAT where applicable and whether introductory rates change at renewal. Do not assume that a build fee includes unlimited future changes.

As an illustration, a hypothetical £900 build with £30 monthly running costs totals £1,260 in the first year before any additional charges. A £1,100 build with £10 monthly running costs totals £1,220 on the same basis. These are calculation examples, not market price estimates. The better choice still depends on what each package provides.

Make SEO deliverables specific

“SEO included” is too broad to compare. Ask whether it means basic technical setup, keyword research, service-page copy, redirect planning or ongoing optimisation. A launch checklist is a useful deliverable, but it does not replace a continuing content and measurement plan.

If you are replacing a site, give the designer an inventory of existing URLs. Agree which pages remain, which are merged, and where retired URLs should redirect. A new design should preserve useful pages and enquiry routes. Ask how the team will check the live site after the domain switches.

Agree what completion looks like

Before paying the final balance, use agreed acceptance checks: the site works on mobile, the forms reach the correct destination, the contact details are accurate, and you can access the accounts you own. Confirm the support period and how defects are distinguished from new work.

ZentroWeb currently advertises website design from £599, with the final scope agreed individually. Use the service page for the current offer and ask for a written quote that separates the build, hosting and ongoing care. The most useful question is not simply “How much?” but “What will be ready for my customers when this project is finished?”
