SEO or Google Ads: Where Should a Small Business Start?

Choose your first acquisition channel using customer demand, urgency, budget and your ability to handle enquiries. Start with a clear measurement plan.

Choose around the business problem

SEO helps customers discover your unpaid search listings. Google Ads gives you access to paid placements through an advertising campaign. Both can bring relevant visitors, but neither fixes an unclear offer or an enquiry form that does not work. Start by defining the service you want to sell and what a qualified enquiry looks like.

A business with immediate spare capacity may want to test paid search while improving its website. A business with a stable pipeline may have more room to invest in organic content and technical work. This is a planning choice, not a rule that one channel is always better.

When SEO is a sensible starting point

SEO is useful when customers repeatedly search for your services and you can build pages that answer their questions well. Begin with the commercial pages: explain who you help, what is included, what affects the price and how to request a quote. Supporting articles should help customers make decisions and link to the relevant service.

Organic results take time to evaluate. Google says changes can take from hours to several months to have an effect, and some may have no noticeable impact. Avoid planning cash flow around a promised ranking date. Assess search visibility and enquiries over appropriate comparison periods while keeping a record of what changed.

When a paid search test can help

A tightly scoped advertising test can help you learn which searches produce useful enquiries. It still needs a suitable landing page, conversion measurement, budget controls and someone to review irrelevant searches. An ad click is not the same as a customer.

Define the test before spending: one service, a genuine service area, a clear offer and an agreed review date. Include management and landing-page work when comparing costs. Do not assume that paid traffic will arrive instantly or that every search term is affordable.

  • Define a qualified lead rather than counting every form submission.
  • Record which enquiries become quotes and customers.
  • Review irrelevant traffic and poor-fit enquiries.
  • Check that phone and form enquiries can be attributed without double counting.

Use simple economics to set expectations

Work backwards from what a customer is worth to your business after delivery costs. In an illustrative example, if one in five qualified enquiries becomes a customer, a £40 cost per qualified enquiry means £200 in acquisition cost per customer before additional sales costs. These are hypothetical numbers; use your own conversion history before setting a budget.

Apply the same discipline to SEO. Include content, technical work and your time in the cost, then assess the enquiries and customers generated over a meaningful period. Organic clicks do not carry a per-click ad charge, but the work needed to earn and maintain them is not free.

A practical first-month decision

In week one, check the landing page and measurement. In week two, improve the offer, service explanation and enquiry route. Then choose one primary channel to test, with a written budget and review point. If you use both, distinguish paid and organic enquiries in your reporting.

ZentroWeb can help establish the website and SEO foundations. Bring your current enquiry numbers, available capacity and target service to a consultation. That context is more useful than choosing a channel solely because a competitor uses it. No campaign should promise a particular Google position or guaranteed sales.
